The Fish Market

This chain helps plug a gap in the Cairo dining scene, where getting good, fresh seafood used to mean heading off on a three-hour trip to Alexandria. Situated on the upper deck of a boat permanently moored on the west bank of the Nile, the scene here is decidedly simple: there's no menu, just a display of unbelievably fresh fish, shrimp, crabs, calamari, and shellfish on ice. Pick what appeals, pay by weight, and the kitchen will prepare it however you like, with a slew of Middle Eastern salads on the side. The delicious bread is baked on the premises in a baladi (country) oven.
