In Cairo's Zamalek area, the Gezira Art Center houses a museum, five galleries, cinema, lecture theatre and an open-air theatre. More than 10,000 artworks represent the development of the Egyptian art movement since the pioneers of the early 20th century. Among the most celebrated artists on display are Mahmoud Mokhtar, the first sculptor in the modern Egyptian art movement, Youssef Kamel, an Impressionist artist who studied Egyptian countryside and traditional markets, Ragheb Ayyad (known for his coloured cartoons) and Ahmad Sabri, the pioneer of Egyptian portrait art.

Cairo's Townhouse Gallery promotes contemporary Arab arts both within the region and internationally through several exhibits. The three-floor building also stages weekly film screenings, experimental theatre performances, music and public lectures.
